About the Reproductive Immunology Group

Our research is aimed at understanding in healthy pregnancy how the pregnant woman immunologically tolerates her baby, and what mechanisms account for complications to occur in aberrant pregnancy. In detail, we investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms in the placenta, and closely look at immune features in maternal blood and fetal cord blood.

The immunological studies are oriented on various clinical situations:

  1. Healthy, naturally conceived pregnancy
  2. Pregnancy after oocyte donation, both healthy and complicated
  3. Women with recurrent pregnancy loss
  4. Women with chronic histiocytic intervillositis (severe form of placental inflammation)

There is strong collaboration between the Depts of Immunology and Obstetrics-Gynaecology. Dr. Marie-Louise van der Hoorn is fetal-maternal-medicine specialist and is a (co)principal investigator in many projects. Dr. Michael Eikmans and Dr. van der Hoorn are enthusiastically guiding young researchers in conducting scientific research.
