Dr. Gonca Karahan
My work is focused on patient-oriented research covering a wide range of topics including characteristics of HLA antibodies in addition to HLA-specific memory in solid organ transplantation. As a researcher aiming to build a bridge between our research laboratory and the diagnostic HLA laboratory at our department, I am involved in developing new methods as well as assessing the applicability of the new technologies aimed at detecting HLA and non-HLA antibodies with the ultimate goal to improve the quality of immunological risk assessment for transplant patients.
I studied Biomedical Sciences in Istanbul University in Turkey. After my graduation in 2000 until 2011, I worked at the diagnostic HLA laboratory of Istanbul University Medical Faculty in Turkey. During this period, I received my MSc degree in 2003 and PhD degree in Medical Biology in 2010 with research centred on soluble CD30 and HLA antibody detection in kidney transplant recipients under supervision of Prof.Dr. Mahmut Carin and Prof.Dr.Fatma Savran Oguz. In 2012, I started my second PhD education in the Netherlands under supervision of Dr. Sebastiaan Heidt and Prof. Dr. Frans Claas on research focusing on HLA-specific memory B cell detection methods and received my PhD degree in 2017. Since then I am working as a postdoctoral researcher in the same group.
