Senior Postdoctoral researcher

My main research interest lies in translational immunology, as I aim at understanding immune processes in health and disease, as a basis to develop new diagnostic and prognostic tools to be employed in patient care.
More specifically, I currently focus on studying the processes involved in the monocytic lineage maturation pathway and the relation with dendritic cells, using multi-omics approaches (e.g. transcriptomics, proteomics and high-end flow and mass cytometry) across different body compartments in distinct physiological states, including steady-state and situations in which homeostasis is disrupted, such as cancer, infection, vaccination or trauma.
In parallel, and in the context of the EuroFlow consortium, I also work on the development of highly standardized and reproducible high-end flow cytometry-based tools for application in multicenter clinical settings.
I completed my bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2004 at the University of Coimbra (Portugal). During the subsequent 10 years I worked in the group of Prof. dr. Alberto Orfao at the Cancer Research Center (Salamanca, Spain). During this period I specialized in phenotypical and molecular characterization of immunological and neoplastic processes, as a basis for the development of new diagnostic and prognostic tools. I obtained my PhD in Cell Biology in 2013, focused on the characterization of the protein and gene expression profiles in Systemic Mastocytosis and their relation with the diagnosis, classification and prognosis of the disease. In November of 2014 I joined Prof. dr. Jacques J.M. van Dongen’s group at the Erasmus MC (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and, in 2016, moved with the whole team to the LUMC (Leiden, The Netherlands), where I am currently a senior postdoctoral researcher.
