Prof. Willem (Wim) Fibbe is a distinguished leader in hematology and regenerative medicine, renowned for his pioneering research on mesenchymal stromal cells and stem cell transplantation. He served as Professor of Hematology and Head of the Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), where he also chaired Division 4 and co-chaired the Medical Research Profile on Vascular and Regenerative Medicine.

Prof. Fibbe studied medicine at the Free University in Amsterdam and completed his training in Internal Medicine
in Leiden, where he later specialized in Hematology. His groundbreaking research focused on the immunomodulatory properties of stromal cells and their clinical applications in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

A driving force in advancing cell therapy research in Europe, Prof. Fibbe played a key role in multiple international consortia and established LUMC as a center of excellence in translational research bridging immunology and clinical hematology. He also served as President of the European Hematology Association and as Editor-in-Chief of Blood, the world’s most influential hematology journal. Since his retirement in 2018, his scientific legacy continues to shape the fields of hematology, immunology, and regenerative medicine.
