Career Overview

Prof. Jannie Borst is a distinguished immunologist whose career spans over four decades. After earning her Master’s degree in Biology with Chemistry from Leiden University in 1980, she conducted her PhD research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, under the mentorship of Prof. Cox P. Terhorst. She received her PhD from Leiden University in 1985. In 1987, she began her independent research career at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), supported by a prestigious Huygens fellowship. She became a staff scientist at NKI in 1992 and led the Division of Immunology from 2002 to 2019. Concurrently, she served as Professor of Experimental Oncology at the University of Amsterdam and coordinated the Biomedical Master track in Oncology. In 2019, she was appointed head of the Department of Immunology at Leiden University Medical Center. As of January 2025, she has officially retired but continues to supervise several PhD students.
