Career overview
Prof. Jacques J.M. van Dongen is a globally recognized leader in medical immunology whose work has transformed diagnostics in hemato-oncology and immunology. After earning his MD and PhD with honors at Erasmus University Rotterdam, he founded the immunodiagnostic laboratory at Erasmus MC and later moved his research and diagnostic teams to Leiden University Medical Center. Together with Frank Staal, he established the highly successful Flow Cytometry Core Facility at LUMC.
His pioneering contributions to PCR-based clonality testing, minimal residual disease (MRD) diagnostics, and flow cytometry have set clinical standards across Europe. He is the founding chairman of the EuroClonality, EuroMRD, and EuroFlow consortia, and has been honored with multiple awards, including two honorary doctorates and an ERC Advanced Grant. Prof. van Dongen has published more than 450 peer-reviewed articles and is widely cited for his influential research.
