Sabine van der Sanden
Curriculum vitae
I studied Biotechnology (with a specialization in molecular and cellular biology and virology) at Wageningen University and obtained my PhD in virology at Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2012. After that, I performed postdoctoral research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta (US), followed by postdoctoral positions at Amsterdam Medical Center and Erasmus Medical Center. These projects focused on the understanding of cellular virus–host interactions, the genetic and antigenic diversity of viruses, viral seroprevalence, and the development of antiviral immunotherapies and viral vector-based gene therapies.
In 2017, I transitioned to industry, joining Arthrogen/MeiraGTx, where I headed a department focusing on the development and manufacturing of novel viral vector–based gene therapies for, among others, arthritic diseases. From 2022 until 2025, I worked as Head of the Virology Department at Eurofins Biopharmaceutical Product Testing in Leiden. Here, I led a department responsible for GMP-compliant quality control testing of biopharmaceutical products.
As of April 2026, I work as Organisational Manager of the HLA Laboratory at the LUMC, focusing on the organizational aspects of the department involved in testing for organ and stem cell transplantation.
